Are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles worth it in North Texas?

If you have replaced a roof in Collin or Dallas County in the last few years, someone has probably asked whether you want Class 4 shingles. The answer depends on how long you plan to stay in the home, what your carrier offers, and how you feel about the next hail storm.

What Class 4 means

Class 4 refers to the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. In the lab, steel balls of increasing size are dropped onto a shingle sample from a fixed height. To earn Class 4, a shingle must survive a two inch steel ball dropped twice in the same spot without cracking through to the back. It is a controlled test, not a promise that no real hailstone will ever damage the roof, but it is a meaningful step up in toughness.

Most Class 4 shingles achieve their rating in one of two ways: a rubberized SBS-modified asphalt that flexes on impact, or a reinforced mat and backing that resists fracture. Both perform noticeably better than standard architectural shingles against the 1 to 1.75 inch hail that DFW sees most often.

What it costs

On a typical 30 square Dallas roof, moving from a standard architectural line to a Class 4 line adds roughly $1,500 to $3,500 depending on the manufacturer and profile (sample range). During an insurance claim, the carrier pays for like-kind replacement, so the upgrade is usually the homeowner's out-of-pocket difference.

The insurance discount

Many Texas carriers offer a premium credit for Class 4 roofs. Discounts we have seen homeowners receive range widely, and some carriers offer none at all. On a $4,000 annual premium, even a 15 percent credit returns about $600 a year, which can pay back the upgrade in three to six years.

  • Keep the manufacturer certificate and installer invoice
  • Send proof of installation to your carrier after the job

When it makes the most sense

Class 4 is easiest to justify when you plan to stay five or more years, your carrier offers a real discount, and your home sits in the hail-heavy corridor running from Denton and Collin Counties down through Richardson and Garland. It also adds a selling point for buyers who have lived through a hail claim.

A Class 4 shingle installed poorly is still a poor roof. Ventilation, nailing pattern and flashing matter just as much as the rating.

When standard shingles are fine

If you plan to sell within a couple of years, your carrier offers no credit, or your budget is tight after a claim, a quality architectural shingle installed correctly is still a solid roof. You can also consider metal, which is inherently impact resistant and lasts far longer, if the budget allows.

Our inspection reports include a Class 4 option on every replacement quote so you can compare real numbers side by side. Prices and discounts in this article are samples for illustration.
